AJAR
How do you fit eight people in a house originally designed for two to four? Thats the problem this project faces. A working couple with twins, their retired parents who run a neighborhood daycare service, and two relatives temporarily living in a rental unit on the property. The main focus of this project was making a place for everyone to feel at home and live comfortably. The design language used was intended to give a mixture of public and private spaces, and more importantly give each person a space to retreat to when they prefer the latter. The first floor serves the couple who originally inhabited the Ain home, their two children, and retired parents. The second floor is reserved for two extended family members temporarily, but will ultimately be a rental property, which is why it has the most privacy from the other two households.
